A respected musician and visual artist, VanGaalen plays almost every instrument and is known as a notorious homebody. Rarely leaving his Calgary basement, he draws, records and makes art. Recorded primarily on a tape machine in the aforementioned basement, his third full-length album, Soft Airplane (Sub Pop 2008), is considered his most complete recording to date. With his 2006 release, Skelliconnection (Sub Pop), VanGaalen earned nominations including the 2007 Juno and Polaris Prize.
