    Woven Bones

Location: Pier 17, The Seaport, NYC

    more

The Seaport kicks off their series this year by digging deep into the heart of Texas, not geographically of course, but it’s soul, and not it’s country soul either. No, this night goes straight to the heart of all that is young and dirty, fuzzed up and blues-punked with a golden smattering of surf. Get your summer going with these two great bands from Austin.

Sponsored in part by Texas on Tour

Update 7/2/10: YellowFever has been removed from this bill (see story here) and replaced by Beach Fossils.

    Bear In Heaven

Location: Pier 17, The Seaport, NYC

    more

Bear in Heaven’s self-described psychedelic, minimalist, pop represents endless hours of stream-of-consciousness, conceived and recorded by Jon Philpot, Adam Wills, Sadek Bazaraa, and Joe Stickney. All Southern transplants, the band now makes its home in Brooklyn and produces music described as “a powerful, functional mix of This Heat, 70s soft rock, early Genesis, and oddly, later Pink Floyd.”  Featuring special guest Zola Jesus.

Thee Oh Sees / Golden Triangle / So Cow

Location: Pier 17, The Seaport, NYC

    more

Thee Oh Sees’ psychedelic sound weaves “AM radio howl with the catchiest of driving tunes” to create “gorgeous harmonies, heightened fidelity, thick spring-reverbed bombast, [and] mighty drums.”. Brooklyn’s Golden Triangle, a band of three girls and three boys, plays loud and spooky, reverb-drenched distorto girl group pop, mixing male/female vocals with gnarly surf guitar jangle. Ireland's So Cow tops this super cool lineup.

Free Energy / Best Coast / Loose Limbs

Location: Pier 17, The Seaport, NYC

    more

Free Energy, dubbed “one of the best live bands in America,” by SPIN, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone, delivers “guitar-heavy and totally unironic AM-rock sound” reminiscent of Tom Petty and Mick Jagger. Best Coast, among the most promising new indie acts of 2010, draws its sound from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s aesthetic of The Beach Boys and The Everly Brothers. Seaport Music Record’s own Loose Limbs starts the night off.

    Avi Buffalo / Chad Vangaalen

Location: Pier 17, The Seaport, NYC

    more

Avi Buffalo, the adopted name of nineteen year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg, began as a solo act, but now includes the talented Rebecca Coleman (keyboards, vocals), Arin Fazio (bass) and Sheridan Riley (drums). The Guardian (UK) dubbed the band's self-titled debut album “one of 2010’s most startlingly lovable albums.” Recalling Neil Young at his most fragile and plaintive, and Thurston Moore at his most resolved and vital, Chad Van-Gaalen will make this night on the pier complete.

Yacht / Black Devil Disco Club / The Witness Protection Programme

Location: Pier 17, The Seaport, NYC

    more

YACHT, formed in 2002 by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, who claim Portland and Marfa, Texas as homes, is best known for combining music with live visual shamanistic, video, audio and PowerPoint performance. Driven to change drastically every six months, or die, the 2010 version bears no resemblance, except biologically, to previous versions of the group.

It's going to be a pier pounding night of great music this week with a line-up that we've been excited about for awhile. YACHT returns to New York for their only summer appearance and we can't wait. Other really exciting news is that French legend Bernard Fevre/Black Devil Disco Club will be also be appearing. This is one of those nights we wish we could start shows at midnight and go until dawn.

Starting things out will be a DJ set from The Witness Protection Programmme, debuting the summer dancefloor hit "Flat Foot" released on Seaport Music Records.

The Wedding Present / Savoir Adore

Location: Pier 17, The Seaport, NYC

    more

The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles… not bad for a band that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry’s game. In 1985 David Lewis Gedge boarded a National Express coach in London with 500 records packed into a pair of his mother’s suitcases and, in this fashion, the band’s debut single GO OUT AND GET ‘EM BOY! was delivered to the distribution company, and The Wedding Present was born. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band’s philosophy ever since. From GEORGE BEST, “an unmitigated delight” [NME], the first full-length release on their own Reception Records onwards, the band has charted an appealing, if often eccentric, course of its very own.
